The International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009 is a global endeavor, initiated by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO. It aims to raise the public awareness at large with strong emphasis on the youth of the great role of astronomy as a science.
The images in “From Earth to the Universe” are a sample of the wide range of objects in the Universe. The diversity in size and shape and more between these objects is amazing. Here are a few of the categories of objects that are found in the Universe.
Solar System
Our Solar System contains many wondrous things: a star (our Sun), an abundance of planets, asteroids, comets, and more.
Stars
These glowing balls of gas are held together by their own gravity and powered by nuclear fusion in their cores.
Galaxies
A galaxy is a system of stars, gas, dust and dark matter bound together by gravity.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is organizing a series of activities to celebrate the IYA 2009 in Egypt, one of which is From Earth to the Universe Exhibition, at the ALEXploratorium, Planetarium Science Center (PSC), from 4 October to 11 November 2009, opened to the public from 10.00 am – 3.00 pm.
