The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Planetarium Science Center (PSC) has participated in this huge event by imaging section six of the moon, on 5 June 2009, by Mr. Aymen Ibrahim, Resident Astronomer at the PSC. Mr. Aymen took the pictures from Mahmoud Public Observatory in Cairo, where the seeing conditions were hazy and there were expansive cirrus clouds.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Planetarium Science Center has won three special awards in the Intel Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF2009) that was held on 14-15 May 2009 in the USA. It has been only our second year to participate in this contest since its inception in 1950.

On 7 May 2009, the PSC has celebrated an International Day of Astronomy, where PSC specialists conducted a number of astronomical interactive games, a daylight observation as well as a stars and planets observation, a lecture by one of the PSC’s professional resident astronomers to fulfill the international purpose of the event and to answer the students questions.

Along with the IYA activities organized by the Planetarium Science Center (PSC), a one-day trip was organized to “Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud Observatory” in Cairo on Friday, 10 April 2009. Mr. Ayman Ibrahim, resident astronomer at the PSC, has given the students a lecture as well as a sky observation during the Zoom Earth program.

A mega-event, the Science Festivity gives science a presence in the community and offers people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to question, discuss, and explore. The Science Festivity 2009 took place on 1-3 April, with the theme “Energy”. This year, it had fifty exhibitors including public and private schools, associations, companies, universities, institutions, as well as international representatives.

With the aim of spreading knowledge and promoting science among the general public, the BA proudly hosts Professor Mostafa Amr Elsayed; Julius Brown Chair, Regents Professor, and Director of Laser Dynamics Laboratory, USA; on Sunday, 29 March 2009, at 10:00 am, where he will be delivering a lecture on Nanotechnology Science in the Great Hall at the BA Conference Center.

The Astronomy Olympiad, one of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 activities organized by the Planetarium Science Center, is a competition targeting school students, 10-13 years of age that aims to stimulate enthusiasm and interest in astronomy. It is an excellent opportunity for applying basics of astronomy, mathematics, science, computer science, social studies, and language to solve the competition’s required challenges. Through hands-on activities, research and observation students demonstrate their creativity, as well as their problem solving and teamwork skills.

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC), in collaboration with Intel Co. and ATLAS For Youth NGO, organized the ALEX Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) on 25 February 2009. The competition aimed to prepare students from Alexandria and neighboring governorates for participating, competing, and winning in the national competition, Egypt Science and Engineering Fair (ESEF), which took place in March 2009. ESEF winning projects, two team projects and four individual projects, also represented Egypt in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) that took place this year in Reno, Nevada, the USA, on 10–15 May 2009.
