Abstract: This case study focuses on participatory chain development of medicinal plants in the Himalayan region of Uttaranchal, India. KIT facilitated an interactive consultation process where stakeholders expressed, exchanged and discussed their views on how to develop a medicinal plant chain which is sustainable and equitable. Policy makers, practitioners, private industry, researchers, and farmers shared opinions and experiences, defining areas for collaboration and joint action. This bulletin includes papers summarizing the predominant issues related to the chain's impediments and opportunities, such as medicinal plant policies and institutions, technology development and diffusion, collectors' and farmers' livelihoods, marketing arrangements and industry perspectives. All contributions were written by experts with ample practical experiences in their area. A unique, comprehensive overview of the medicinal plant chain in Uttaranchal is the result, providing clear and practical recommendations for improving its performance.
