Abstract:
Case stories of increasing local content for the more effective use of ICTs are presented, including: exporting handicrafts from Asia; global e-commerce by small and medium enterprises; a women’s business CD in Uganda; Internet promotion and communications for Nigerian artists; rural development through radio in Nigeria; development through radio in Africa; Malawi action theatre and creative community mobilization; disseminating agricultural information in Tanzani; radio book series; women and ICTs in Uganda; virtual reality for development (Uganda); ICTs for African educators; producing and exchanging audio-visual endogenous productions; digital development anthologies for Africa; African journals online; MetaBase: an online library contributing to social change in Central America; Qwa-Qwa community radio in South Africa; revitalizing traditional knowledge of Pacific navigation; community documentation of indigenous knowledge in Kenya); documenting indigenous knowledge in Sarawak (Malaysia); participatory rural radio in Nepal; Footsteps – a newsletter for development workers; youths generating local content through local centres; an ICT publishing house for youth in Mexico; a community-based journal in support of decentralization; literacy training by computer in Mali; traditional knowledge and community healthcare in Nigeria; digital health content: producing health videos for health workers; and the National Health Learning Materials Centre in Ghana.
