Abstract: Constructed wetlands are sustainable and cost-effective wastewater treatment systems that have a number of advantages compared to conventional technical systems: they maintain a high performance, use less energy, sequester carbon, require less operation and maintenance and are better able to cope with the impacts of climate change. In this publication, the first constructed wetland demonstration plant for 80 population equivalents (funded by DBU) in Bulgaria is discussed. The design, construction and operation of this subsurface flow constructed wetland are detailed as implemented in Vidrare, Pravets municipality.
