Abstract: This new case study shows how Unilever works in multistakeholder partnerships to develop sustainable business models in tea. Models that have environmental, social and economical pay offs, while ensuring the financial and longer-term sustainability of the tea sector. The study offers successes and lessons learned in reaching out to smallholders. The study is part 2 of a series on mainstreaming sustainable tea. Reaching out and involving smallscale farmers is a huge challenge. How to train hundred thousands of farmers in remote areas in good agricultural practices? How to secure a constant supply of high quality tea? This case study offers you the insights, best practices and lessons learned of Unilever, Rainforrest Alliance, the Kenyan Tea Development Agency, Wageningen University, Imaflora and SAI Platform in the inclusion of smallholders in mainstream sustainability programs in tea.
