Proportions are also useful measures of morbidity and mortality.
They have different characteristics than rates and ratios. In a
proportion, the numerator represents the number of events that
meet a set of criteria, like that of a ratio. However, the denominator
represents the maximum number of events that could meet these
criteria. Like a rate, the numerator and denominator of a proportion
are related. By definition, the range of a proportion is between 0.0
and 1.0 (or 0% and 100%). The general formula for calculating
proportions is shown on slide 27.
