Observations
of the patients with congenital
hypothyroidism (CH) are consistent with point mutations and autosoaml-recessive
inheritance for the full defect. Consanguinity has been the rule. The most serious outcome
of congenital hypothyroidism is mental retardation. Most common causes include aplasia and
hypoplasia, radioiodine, Iodine deficiency, thyrotropin deficiency, thyroid hormone
unresponsiveness and defective synthesis of thyroxine. Though recent studies reported the possibility of a
prenatal diagnosis, neonatal screening
is the most useful and practical tool for early diagnosis and treatment of congenital
hypothyroidism.. |
