Best sources are
usually nominative. Two types:
- Registration systems, in place in some European cities
from the 18th century and earlier. Yield estimates of the
number of people who enter or leave city, as well as demographic events
such as births, deaths, and marriages. Major drawback is that they only
pertain to a few cities
- Ecclesiastical records of births, deaths, and marriages
exist for some societies back to the 16th centuries. These can
(and do) yield estimates of population dynamics. Major drawback is lack of
complete coverage in religiously heterogeneous societies.
