This phenomenon was first demonstrated in a
study of Bangkok school children, 40 of whom experienced a secondary dengue
infection, probably with dengue 2 virus. Seven children were hospitalized
during this infection; 33 secondary infections were silent. Pre-secondary
infection serum samples had been collected from all children. These were
tested for ability neutralize or enhance dengue infections in cultures of
monocytes from dengue-susceptible human donors. |
