The team includes a physician, nurse and
respiratory therapist. All members are required to take a two week course to
familiarize them with the equipment and the effects of altitude and other
stresses of flight on the patient. At most the team can take care of 3
ventilated or 6 nonventilated patients. The physician role can be filled
with a physician familiar with critical care like pulmonologists, emergency
medicine physicians, anesthesiologists or surgeons. At times with the high
demand for teams this role has also been filled with internists or family
practice physicians after completion of the two week course. The nurse has
to have 2 years of critical care experience before being qualified for the
team.
