Why do the numbers diagnosed each year increase? Our cohort was a BIRTH cohort, so the number of children in the cohort increased every year. In 1971 there were just over 158,000 children in the cohort, in 1972 there were just over 165,000 children, etc. Also, the mean age increased every year and older people are more likely to get cancer. Why does the number start to fall after 1989? We think it is because NHSCR were several years behind in recording cancers. Getting these details is complex and involves a lot of checking. |
