Some of the
advocates of this trend of thought are those who place greater emphasis on the reduction
of risk factors than over the more difficult and complex task of modification of
socio-cultural and political environments. Some HP “fanatics” subscribe to the notion
that to change communities and groups, it is necessary first to change each individual.
Yet, there is sufficient evidence to affirm that collective behavior is not the sum of
individual ones. There is also evidence that individual behavior is shaped by social
forces and to change individual behavior, social conditions must be changed. Fanatics of
individual life-style changes always end up “blaming the victim”. |
