In the future, more emphasis will probably be put on
developing new vaccines within the military, especially for prevention of enteric illness.
We still have a lot to learn about the epidemiological characteristics of biological
warfare as they apply to isolated terrorist attacks and to large-scale military
confrontations. This is currently a hot topic around the world. Finally, it seems that in
the future, military epidemiologists, like their civilian counterparts, will be placing
more emphasis on the field of molecular epidemiology. Linking health states in the
population to genetic markers measurable in the individual holds great promise as we enter
the 21st century.
