Other prominent examples of "authority advises" that are not backed by scientific proof and are opinion based rather than evidence based include:

1. Blood letting in the treatment of eclampsia. How gross?

2. Diuretics in the treatment of pre-eclampsia. Now we know that diuretics will not reduce the edema seen in these cases and it will reduce the already contracted intravascular volume of these patients leading to worsening of their condition.

3. Routine episiotomy on the assumption that it will reduce future pelvic floor relaxation.

4. The dictum "Once a section, always a section", now we know that Vaginal Birth After Cesarean is a safe approach to previous Cesarean section in selected cases.

5. Uterine ventrosuspension for the treatment of infertility. Now we know that more than 30% of healthy fertile women will have their uteri in a normal retroverted position.

6. Surgical removal of the epsilateral ovary in cases of tubal ectopic pregnancy (EP) on the assumption that this will increase the chance of future pregnancies.
