Maternal
progesterone secretion is necessary for some 100 days of gestation.
Afterwards, pregnancy can be maintained by progesterons produced by the
fetal-placental unit.
If the mare is NOT pregnant, prostaglandin F2 will be secreted by the uterus to lyse the CLs, and the mare will return to estrus.
