The sickness
clusters in families, and it affects the poor living in rural areas more
than any other group. Sharecropping and growing of corn are common in
areas where the disease occurs. The problem is greatest in spring though
the early symptoms occur in winter. The sickness is common in prisoners
and patients in asylums. It does not affect staff in the institutions.
