The EU-ban on British beef is now lifted because the risk of infection is estimated to be 1 case of nvCJD per 10 billion servings of British beef. Many consumers however still do not eat beef muscle if they were uncertain of its origin and they avoid burghers or sausages which contain mechanically -recovered meat. (This meat is washed off the bones under pressure and might contain nervous tissue which is where BSE replicates.)
