BLUETONGUE VIRUS, another Orbivirus, causes high mortality in sheep. Transmitted between animals by Culicoides midges. Outbreaks occur when and where the Culicoides breed. Found in Africa, N. America, Portugal & Spain. Controlled by import controls, spraying to kill insect vectors,polyvalent live vaccines with the relevant local serotypes.
