Fetal Irradiation
•Termination
of pregnancy is NOT justified based upon radiation risks for fetal doses
less than 10 rem.
•Excess
childhood cancer risk is ~0.06% per rem. Normal childhood cancer
incidence is 0.075%.
•Fetal
doses greater than 50 rem can cause significant fetal damage, the
magnitude and type of which is a function of dose and stage of
pregnancy.
•For
fetal doses between 10 and 50 rem, decisions regarding termination of
pregnancy should be made based upon individual circumstances.
