We were
one of the first to report the negative association between alcohol
consumption and coronary heart disease4.
We also found a graded positive association of alcohol drinking with blood
pressure, at a time when hypertension researchers were focused mainly on
electrolytes and on the kidney5.
We were the first to report a positive association of the leukocyte count
with coronary heart disease, which has been amply confirmed6.
This may have been an early indication of the role of inflammation in
coronary heart disease, although we did not realize this at the time. We
also found an association of obesity with risk of developing multiple
myeloma in two databases7,
not obviously biologically plausible, but confirmed elsewhere.
