Besides the obvious problem created by such massive bloodlettings, an additional hazard for the patient lay in the possibility that the physician might mistakenly open an artery instead of a vein.  When this unfortunate incident occurred, surgery was often necessary to resolve this dilemma, if it could be handled at all.  If not the patient's fate was sealed.
