Tax (from the Latin taxo; "I estimate") is an imposed financial charge or other levy that a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) pays. A tax is imposed  by a state or the functional equivalent of a state and the failure to pay is punishable by law. Taxes have existed in many forms throughout history and are still used for a variety of purposes.
