It consists of seven chapters: the first chapter deals with letters to the dead through the ages and the reasons for their emergence. The second analyses letters from the Old Kingdom till the First Intermediate Period, while the third chapter analyses the letters to the dead from the Middle Kingdom until the Late Period. The fourth chapter deals with Coptic letters. The fifth chapter presents a general analysis of the materials on which letters were written, how they were sent, the relationship between the sender and the addressee, the subject of letters. The sixth chapter deals with letters to the newly deceased (Imam Shafi'i model). While the last chapters is a comparison between the similar expressions and structures in the letters sent to Imam Al Shafi’ and those sent to the dead in ancient and modern times.
