Medieval calligraphic inscriptions on metal objects in Azerbaijan: In Azerbaijan primitive men created pictures and spread them to express a certain thought and contact. Rock carvings (12th- 8th centuries B.C.) and Latin inscription (1th century A.D. ) engraved on a rock were discovered in Gobustan, which is an ancient site. Writing is one of indicators that shows a highly developed culture and existence of a state in ancientry .A bead with cuneiform writing of the 14th -8th centuries B.C. discovered in Khojali (Karabagh), a stone with Greek inscription (1th-2th centuries) discovered in Sheki, and a stone with Albanian alphabet of 52 letters (4th- 7th centuries) are rare patterns of epigraphy in the exposition of Azerbaijan National History Museum. First of all people expressed their thoughts on stones, then after discovering metal, they expressed emotions with the help of calligraphy in coins, seals, weapons and vessels. After the coming of Islam to Azerbaijan (7th-8th centuries) our craftsmen that praised the beauties of Arabic and its alphabet in their works of art , used calligraphy in architectural monuments, mosques, as well as on the metal objects. Our calligraphers widely used different scripts of Arabic, like “Kufic”, “Thuluth”, “Naskh”, and “Nasta’liq”. Hundreds of metal objects with Arabic inscription stored at the museum prove that. Azerbaijani craftsmen tried hard to reach the top of beauty on the coins, kind of weapons, vessels and jewellery with Kufic script of the 9th-13th centuries, Thuluth , Naskh, and Nasta’liq scripts of the 14th -20th centuries. Calligraphic patterns are one of main branches of Azerbaijan reach culture and memory of our ancestors. This kind of art engraves in memory our sacred book - Koran on the one hand, and a keeper of sayings, quotes of our great personalities on the other hand. These unprecedented patterns of art related to our culture strengthen foundation of culture of Muslim countries.
