Presentation Abstract:
ARMENO-TURKISH LITERATURE AS AN EXPRESSIVE FORM, 1727-1876: The title of this study is inspired by an article of McKenzie, “The Book as an Expressive Form” (D. F. McKenzie, “The Book as an Expressive Form,” in The Book History Reader, Routledge, London, 2002, pp. 27-38.) In this article, McKenzie shows us that bibliography is not only a description but also the expression of social structures. By unifying in its descriptive format authors, readers, publishers, dates and places of publication, bibliography is a kind of sociological framework. The aim of this essay is to apply the same perspective to a bibliography based on Armeno-Turkish books, extending from 1727 to 1968. As the period which it covers is too long and the social topography which it describes is too complex to analyze, this essay will focus on the years between 1727-1876 and show how this bibliography is the expression of the Ottoman Armenian social context.
