Presentation Abstract:

Armenian Printing in Iran: Iranian Armenians began printing with movable types in 1638 - it was the first long lasting printing enterprise in the Middle East. This first printing press of Iran was installed in the Holy Savior’s Monastery of New Julfa (the Armenian suburb of Isfahan), where mainly religious texts and polemic writings against the propaganda of the Roman-Catholic Church were printed. The heyday of this press was in the 17th century. Tabriz became the second centre of Armenian printing in Iran in 1889, followed by Tehran which is the heart of Armenian publishing since the beginning of the 20th century.
