Presentation Abstract:
The Millenium of Johannes Gutenberg between East and West: From perspective of history the lecture will follow the manifold lines of contact between the Middle Rhine region, where Johannes Gutenberg – the inventor of printing with movable letters – was born and the Mediterranean world since the 15th century CE. The trade routes from and to Venice, the important cultural influence but political decline of City of Konstantinopolis and finally the rise of the house of Osman in the same city caused a manifold change in knowledge and perspective of the world. The printing medium used by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz opened a new way of reading and writing competence, to spread science and news. The Middle Rhine region as a crossroad of trade between East and West, North and South became a favored place to receive ideas and to distribute new ideas. Introducing into the world of Johannes Gutenberg, visiting the centers of long-distant trade and opening the a view to the period of Renaissance the subject invites to follow the connecting lines between East and West.
