Even after its disappearance 1,600 years ago, the ancient Library of Alexandria continues to survive in the memory of all scholars not only as the largest library in antiquity but also as a vibrant center for scientific and intellectual debate. Aiming to revive its past scientific mission, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) launched the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in July 2003.
The CSSP is an independent scientific non-profit institution affiliated to the BA and chaired by its Director. It was established by Egyptian Presidential Decree no 361 of 2002.
The CSSP seeks to create a generation of innovative researchers through research grant programs, and it recognizes the existence of untapped potential in young researchers all over Egypt who are eager to collaborate with international institutions but lack the means needed for such collaboration. All activities handled by the CSSP primarily demonstrate quality, excellence, and intellectual rigor implemented with professionalism and cost-effectiveness. The CSSP is committed to providing an environment that both encourages and inspires scientists and those who are keen to achieve their personal and professional goals.
In 2004, the CSSP launched the BioVision Alexandria Biannual Conference that is held every even year, alternating with the World Life Sciences Forum - BioVision, which is held every odd year in Lyon, France. The CSSP also developed the Research Grants Program in the same year. In 2005, the CSSP hosted the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World - Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO). The CSSP won the TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2014 for their significant contributions to the Arab region in 2010.
The CSSP’s mission is to become the nation’s premier force in the dissemination of good practice, advice, resources, and materials and for the delivery of need-based quality skills training for scientists and researchers. To support a network of partnerships with centers and elite institutions, the CSSP is committed to the development of quality science and the acceleration of new technologies.
To achieve this mission, the CSSP aims to do the following:
- Create a network of international collaboration
- Support activities that enhance career progression
- Sponsor scientific research projects
- Promote science and technology through public awareness programs
