Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) was reborn in October 2002 to reclaim the mantle of its ancient namesake. It is not just an extraordinarily beautiful building; it is also a vast complex where arts, history, philosophy, and science come together. Moreover, the myriad activities it offers have made it a place for open discussion, dialogue, and understanding.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has always been a vibrant center of scientific and intellectual debate. Currently, the New Bibliotheca Alexandrina is seeking to revive its past historical scientific mission so it can be recognized again by scientists all over the world as one of the best global linkage venues to eminent researchers and scientific institutions.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina aims to be: A center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge; and to be a place of dialogue, learning and understanding between cultures and peoples.

The unique role of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, as that of a great Egyptian Library with international dimensions, will focus on four main aspects, that seek to recapture the spirit of the Ancient Library of Alexandria. It aspires to be:

  • The world’s window on Egypt.
  • Egypt’s window on the world.
  • A leading institution of the digital age.
  • A center for learning, tolerance, dialogue and understanding.
