Biography
He was born in Egypt in 1950, and holds a PhD in Physics from Cornell University, USA, from 1980.
He has been on the faculty of Brown University, University of California at San Diego (UCSD), and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At Illinois he was Head of the Department of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics for a decade.
At Virginia he has been Dean of Engineering 2003-2005. At UCSD he was Chief Scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center 1989-1992. He is a fellow of American Physical Society, American Academy of Mechanics, the World Innovation Foundation, and Danish Center for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, He is married and has two sons.
