Biography:

Work Experience: 2005-present: representative of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in the MENA region. 2004-present: consultant for the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) for the MENA region. 2002-present: Contributor to the Beirut-based The Daily Star. 2002-2004 Correspondent for the Dakar-based Pan African News Agency (PANA) in Egypt and consultant for the Copenhagen-based International Media Support (IMS). 2000-2001: Amnesty International Human Rights Education Coordinator for the MENA region based in Beirut, Lebanon. 1998: Amnesty International Development Field worker in Gaza and the West Bank. 1997-present:: Contributor to US and Arab papers , including The Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Herald Tribune, Annahar and Al-Masry El-Youm. 1995-1996: Director of the Tunisian Section of Amnesty International. 1994-1996: Correspondent for United Press International and researcher for Reporters Sans Frontieres in Tunisia. 1993-present : Contributor to Le Monde Diplomatique. 1988-1996: Correspondent for the French daily Le Croix in Tunisia. 1975-1994: Reporter with the official Tunisian news agency Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) in Tunis. Fired amid general crackdown on independent journalists and human rights defenders. Research: Contributor to “Global Entertainment Media, a comprehensive study addressing the mass news media worldwide”, edited by Anne Cooper-Chen, published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (2005). 1984: “Journalism training in France and the UK,” (dissertation) University of Paris II. 1975: “The International Women’s Year in the Tunisian Media,” (dissertation) Press and Information Sciences Institute, Tunis, Tunisia.
