Energy

From: 25 November 2012 To: 29 November 2012 Age Group: 9 -12 years

In this workshop, the students will be introduced to the different forms of energy, such as the kinetic, potential and thermal energy, among others. Through interactive experiments, they will learn how an object can possess energy.

The Solar System in 60 minutes

From: 18 November 2012 To: 22 November 2012 Age Group: 9 -12 years

Astronomy is one of, if not the oldest sciences; it is the study of our universe, its origin and nature, celestial bodies and phenomena that originate beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. This workshop unravels fascinating facts about the Solar System and its different celestial bodies through model-making and a selection of hands-on activities.

A Tour through the Nervous System

From: 11 November 2012 To: 15 November 2012 Age Group: 9 -12 years

Humans recognize each other instantly, distinguish different forms and colors, differentiate between many different smells, and feel even a feather brushing their skin. In this workshop, the students will be introduced to the central nervous system, and its role in the transmission of impulses from senses through hands-on activities.

Electronics

From: 04 November 2012 To: 08 November 2012 Age Group: 12 -16 years

Humans have an intimate relationship with electricity, to the point that it is virtually impossible to separate our life from it; it lights up our world and powers it. Through a number of exhilarating hands-on experiments, students learn about conductivity and Ohm’s law and how it is applied.

Le Systeme Solaire (The Solar System)

From: 27 October 2012 To: 17 November 2012 Age Group: 9 -12 years

Who would not like to explore the outer space with all its mysteries? This workshop will take the students on a journey to discover the secrets of this universe. Through model-making and hands-on activities, the students will learn about the movement of the Earth, and the other planets around the Sun.

Note: This is the first workshop in French, and will take place every Saturday during the period 27 October - 17 November 2012.

Language: French

Engineering Drawing Workshop

From: 21 October 2012 To: 25 October 2012 Age Group: 12 -16 years

Engineering drawing is a graphical language used by engineers, the purpose of which is to convey graphically the ideas and information necessary for the construction or analysis of machines, structures, or systems. In this workshop, students will learn how to apply the engineering drawing.

Chemical Reactions

From: 14 October 2012 To: 18 October 2012 Age Group: 12 -16 years

Chemical reactions are a part of our daily lives; they occur when two or more molecules interact, and a substance results. Some of the important kinds of reactions are combustion, synthesis, decomposition, and more. In this workshop, students will understand what goes on in a chemical reaction through chemical equations.

Starting Point II

From: 08 April 2012 To: 12 April 2012 Age Group: 12 -16 years

Combinations of 26 letters make up every word in the English language, 28 in the case of Arabic. Similarly, every material in the world is composed of different combinations of about 100 elements that cannot be broken down into simpler substances through ordinary chemistry.

Categorizing and looking for patterns in matter started in ancient times. In Aristotle’s time, water, fire, earth and air were considered the basis for everything. Over time, many observations and experiments, in addition to the discovery of new elements, led to the scientific classification system of elements based on common characteristics and behaviors known as the periodic table.

What is the periodic table? How are elements arranged? How are element groups defined? During this program, students learn the answers to these questions and more. They learn the history of the periodic table, play games, and conduct hands-on experiments; they also get to build their own periodic tables.

Both parts must be attended.
