Dr. Farkhonda Hassan
professor of geology at the American University in Cairo, a member of the Egyptian Parliament, and secretary-general for the National Council for Women in Egypt.
Biography:
In addition to her current position as Professor Emeritus of Geology at the American University in Cairo, her membership in the Shura Assembly, the International Parliamentary Union, the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly Committees, the Parliamentary Network of the World Bank, and her current post as Secretary-General of the National Council for Women, Dr. Hassan holds the following positions:
• Chair of the Council of the Ethics of Scientific Research of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt
• Chair of the National Committee for Women in Science and Technology
• Co-Chair of the Gender Advisory Board (GAB) of the United Nations Committee on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD) and Focal Point for the North Africa Sub-Node
• Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and member of its Committee on Opportunities for Science (COOS)
• Member of the Arab Network for Women in Science and Technology (ANWST)
• Former Vice-President of the Third World Academy for Women in Science (TWAS) from 1990 -2006
• Member of the Scientists Without Borders program of the New York Academy of Science
• Member of the Selection Committee of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise
