Understanding Sea-level Changes in Mediterranean Shores: Their Origins and Implications

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), through the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), affiliated to the Academic Research Sector, and The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries’ Arab Regional Partner (TWAS–AREP), is organizing a free online lecture titled “Understanding Sea-level Changes in Mediterranean Shores: Their Origins and Implications”; presented by Assoc. Prof. Oula Amrouni, Researcher, Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM), Tunisia Regional Coordinator MEDFRIEND, UNESCO PHI, on Sunday, 3 November 2024; at 12:00 pm (Cairo Time).

The lecture will discuss how sea-level changes in the Mediterranean region are affected by a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. These changes have significant impacts on coastal ecosystems, infrastructure, and local economies. As the Mediterranean's unique geography and climate make it particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise, leading to increased coastal erosion, habitat loss, and increased risk of flooding.

The lecture will highlight the need to understand these changes for developing effective strategies for coastal management, urban planning, and environmental conservation.

Lecture Format: Online (open for public with registration)

Registration deadline: 30 October 2024
