Workshop: Educational Institute for Responsible Research on Infectious Diseases: Ensuring Safe Science in the 21st Century
8-13 September 2012, Aqaba, Jordan

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, announces the call for applications for the workshop Educational Institute for Responsible Research on Infectious Diseases: Ensuring Safe Science in the 21st Century.
The workshop will take place in Aqaba, Jordan during 8 - 13 September 2012. It aims to develop a network of faculty in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region who will be able to teach issues related to research with dual use potential, by using tenets of responsible science and active learning pedagogical techniques.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be faculty members who have been working and living in Egypt, Yemen, Algeria or Abu Dhabi, and should apply in teams of 2-3 from each institution.
- Applicants must stay for the entire workshop from 8 to 13 September 2012.
- Applicants must agree to use one or more of the instructional materials developed at the workshop in their teaching, preferably in the fall semester 2012.
- It is expected that one member/team will participate in the follow-up evaluation meeting during the academic year 2012-2013.

Application for the BA/CSSP Research Grants 2012
Deadline for Application: 31 October 2012
Research Grants 2012 is now available online for young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers seeking funds in one of the following areas of study:
- Agricultural Sciences
- Biology and Biotechnology
- Chemistry and Biochemistry
- Engineering Sciences and Technology
- Information Technology and Bioinformatics
- Mathematics
- Earth Sciences
- Medical Sciences
- Physics and Biophysics
- Pre-University Education
Eligibility and Deadlines:
- Egyptian scholars who have earned their PhD within the past five years (following December 2006).
- Applicants must hold a current position at a public/private academic or research institution in Egypt, and the research must be conducted in Egypt.
- Currently engaged or can arrange to work on a joint research project with foreign counterpart(s) at a university or research center abroad.
- Applicants must not exceed 35 years of age by January 2012.
- Grant applications must be submitted online before 31 October 2012.

Science Supercourse (SSC)
Science Supercourse (SSC) is a project jointly coordinated by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Dr. Ronald Laporte, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh.
This effort was designed to improve information sharing among professionals and educators in four major fields of science: public health, agriculture, computer engineering, and environment. Lectures are shared in PowerPoint format to empower educators around the world.

The SSC is based on involving the community and encouraging professors and experts to participate by adding their own lectures to the website for the benefit of students and teachers everywhere.

Themes:
The course will focus on the following topics:
- The interaction between the economy and the natural environment: market failure and government intervention.
- Economic analysis of the optimal use of natural resources following the basic distinction between renewable and non-renewable resources.
- Pollution as an external effect of production and/or consumption: instruments to internalise the related social costs (standards, taxes, emission permits, etc).
- Conflict on natural resources' use: relative and absolute scarcity-limits to growth (example: land, water).
- Methods to assess the "value" of environmental goods and services for which market prices are incorrect or do not exist.
- Growth sustainability.
- National environmental accounts - National indicators of resource use, environmental quality and sustainability.
- Developed and less developed countries' relation-international treaties.
