Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. TWAS-ARO 8th Annual Meeting "The Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region"

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World's Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) will hold its 8th Annual Meeting, 30-31 December 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The theme this year is The Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region.

The Meeting will be preceded by an inter-disciplinary forum on sustainable human development. It intends to bring together TWAS-ARO members and young affiliates, along with other distinguished speakers, to tackle several issues related to the role of science, engineering and technology in achieving sustainable human development. It also aims at raising the awareness to the importance of sustainable development, and identifying available alternative solutions to problems of sustainability, in the Arab region.

TWAS-ARO will sponsor 10 outstanding young researchers, from different Arab countries, to present their projects/researches on the Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region.

TWAS-ARO 8th Annual Meeting "The Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region"

Call for Posters

We cordially invite you to submit an abstract for presentation during the Poster Session that will be held during TWAS-ARO 8th Annual Meeting, 30-31 December 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. During the Event, young researchers will be offered the opportunity to meet other young scientists, from different Arab countries, to share their views and benefit from informal discussions with other conference participants. They will also meet renowned scientists, and hear success stories from those who have managed to combat difficulties.

Posters must be set up on the first day of the Meeting, and will remain on display throughout the Meeting. Authors must be present at their poster station during the scheduled poster session, and prepared for discussion with participants.

Your poster should address subjects related to the Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region.

The applicant should be:

  • A young researcher, under the age of 40 years.
  • An Arab national citizen and resident of a developing country.
  • MSc or PhD student or post-doctoral researcher, working in the field of Sustainable Human Development.

TWAS Visiting Scientist Programme

TWAS Visiting Scientist Programme

The TWAS Visiting Scientist Programme supports visits of internationally renowned scientists to institutions located in developing countries, especially those located in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The objective of the programme is to provide institutions and research groups in developing countries, especially those with limited outside contacts, with the opportunity to establish long-term links with world leaders in science and so help develop capacity-building in their country. Under the programme, prospective host institutions can invite internationally renowned experts in areas of science other than mathematics and physics to collaborate in research and training.

The visit should have a minimum stay of two weeks at the host institution. TWAS will cover the cost of the air ticket and will provide an honorarium of USD 500, while the host institution is expected to cover local expenses. Attached below please find the relevant application form.

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, http://twas.ictp.it/  is now accepting applications for the TWAS Research and Advanced Training Fellowship programme.

The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various developing countries.

Eligible fields include one or more of the following: Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.

Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012
Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region

Knowing the scarcity of water in the Arab region, and the problems the region will face in case no new efficient and effective techniques were developed in the field of water resources management, TWAS-ARO chose the theme of “ Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region” for the Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012.

The prize will be awarded to a young scientist from the Arab region who conducted innovative or pioneer researches on water resources management in the Middle East, covering topics such as:

  • Outstanding achievements in the construction or improvement of water and waste disposal projects serving the financially needy communities in developing countries.
  • The impact of climate change on water scarcity in North Africa and the Middle East.
  • Lowering the cost of desalination technology and working in new techniques to make the process of resolving long term water scarcity needs in the Middle East and North Africa more affordable.

The value of the prize is 3,000 USD.

A signed, stamped official nomination letter should be sent along with the nomination form, the applicant’s CV, and list of publications to both the address and emails shown below.

BioVision.Nxt 2013

Registration for BioVision.Nxt 2013 is Now Open.

The World Life Sciences Forum, BioVision, invites 100 promising PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to attend the 3-day forum, BioVision.Nxt, which will be held on 24–26 March in Lyon, France.

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) will partially cover the travel expenses of 50 distinguished young scientists, to attend this high-profile event. Each of the TWAS Regional Offices will select 10 eligible young scientists, in the field of life sciences, from the region. The young scientists selected from the Arab Region will be partially sponsored by TWAS-Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO). Priority will be given to first-time applicants.

BioVision.Nxt aims to provide a unique opportunity for young scientists from developing countries to interact with some of the world's leading life scientists. It also aims at fostering dialogue on the impact of life sciences future developments on society in both the Western world and developing countries.

The following documents are to be submitted online along with the completed application form:

  • Document certifying the applicant’s registration in a PhD or postdoctoral program, (PDF format).
  • Reference letter from a senior scientist familiar with your current research work, (PDF format).
  • Transcripts of the last two degrees obtained, (PDF format).
  • Photocopy of the information page of passport/ID, (with picture, PDF format).
  • Passport size photograph, (JPEG).

Research Grants 2012 is now available online for young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers seeking funds in one of the following areas of study:

  • Information Technology and Bioinformatics
  • Mathematics
  • Earth Sciences
  • Medical Sciences
  • Physics and Biophysics

Eligibility and Deadlines:

  • Egyptian scholars who have earned their PhD within the past five years (following December 2006).
  • Applicants must hold a current position at a public/private academic or research institution in Egypt, and the research must be conducted in Egypt.
  • Currently engaged or can arrange to work on a joint research project with foreign counterpart(s) at a university or research center abroad.
  • Applicants must not exceed 35 years of age by January 2012.
  • Grant applications must be submitted online before 31 October 2012.

Science Supercourse

Science Supercourse is a project jointly coordinated by Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Ronald Laporte, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh.

This effort was designed to improve information sharing among professionals and educators in four major fields of science: public health, agriculture, computer engineering, and environment. Lectures are shared in PowerPoint format to empower educators around the world.
