TWAS-ARO 8th Annual Meeting "The Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region"

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World's Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) will hold its 8th Annual Meeting, 30-31 December 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The theme this year is "The Role of Science, Engineering and Technology in Achieving Sustainable Human Development in the Arab Region".
The Meeting will be preceded by an inter-disciplinary forum on sustainable human development. It intends to bring together TWAS-ARO members and young affiliates, along with other distinguished speakers, to tackle several issues related to the role of science, engineering and technology in achieving sustainable human development. It also aims at raising the awareness to the importance of sustainable development, and identifying available alternative solutions to problems of sustainability in the Arab region.
Registration deadline: 1 December 2012.

“Research Essentials” Workshop
18 - 19 December 2012
In continuation of its role in promoting science and technology in the region, the CSSP is organizing the “Research Essentials” Workshop as a part of the Visiting Scholar Program (VSP).
The two-day workshop entitled “Research Essentials” will aim to deliver skill quality training for the participating young researchers by educating them about the steps they should undertake to deliver a high quality research.
The Workshop will cover many topics in the benefit of the researchers including:
- Types of Research
- Logics of Scientific Thinking
- Research Planning and Management
- Obtaining Scientific Data
- Dealing with Copyright Material
- How to Write Scientific Proposal
- How to Publish and Promote Research
Seats are limited to 30, and priority will be given to first 30 payments.

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) is organizing the "Smart Grid: The Future Power System" lecture, on 20 December 2012, Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Lecture Hall.
The lecture will be presented by Prof. Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington, USA.

Science Supercourse
Science Supercourse is a project jointly coordinated by Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Ronald Laporte, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh.
This effort was designed to improve information sharing among professionals and educators in four major fields of science: public health, agriculture, computer engineering, and environment. Lectures are shared in PowerPoint format to empower educators around the world.

The SSC is based on involving the community and encouraging professors and experts to participate by adding their own lectures to the website for the benefit of students and teachers everywhere.
