The ATLAS of Islamic-World Science and Innovation Project - Science and Innovation in Egypt

The ATLAS of Islamic-World Science and Innovation project
Science and Innovation in Egypt

ATLAS

It is not often that a country is faced with the prospect of rebuilding from the ground up. Egypt’s revolution in 2011 – notwithstanding the many and inevitable challenges it presents – has ushered in an era of unprecedented hope and expectation.

As part of the Atlas of Islamic-World Science and Innovation project – conceived in 2009 by the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) and the Royal Society, this report assesses the current state of science, technology and innovation in Egypt, its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the many ideas under consideration and programmes already in place for improving them.

The "Global Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities" Conference

The "Global Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities" Conference
15 - 18 April 2013, Alexandria, Egypt

Dust storms scour Iraq, Freak floods wreak havoc in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Rising sea levels erode Egypt’s coast. The Arab world is already suffering impacts consistent with climate-change predictions.

A recent United Nations’ Development Programme research paper concluded that, for a region that is already vulnerable to many non-climate stresses, climate change and its potential physical and socioeconomic impacts are likely to exacerbate this vulnerability, leading to large-scale instability.

The “Global Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities” conference focuses on the Arab MENA region and EuroMed. The conference aims to establish the scientific foundation for sound decisions on infrastructure, urban development, natural resources, public health, and insurance, as well as for planning—from community organizations to international disaster risk management.

Join leading academics, Nobel laureates, and environment practitioners in Egypt, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Abu Qir, Alexandria, from  April 15 to 18, 2013 to explore this situation.
