TWAS Arab Regional Office launched at the BA
The Arab Regional Office of the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS-ARO) was launched at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), 2-3 June 2005, under the theme of “Visions and Expectations”.
Headquartered at the BA, the TWAS-ARO aims to promote the activities of TWAS and its affiliated organizations, in addition to promoting scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the region. This is in line with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s commitment to supporting the progress of science and technology in the region, for they are sure keys to the success of any nation.
The meetings discussed the history of science and technology in medicine, biotechnology research in Egyptian institutions, as well as basic science and development of the Arab world and a vision of the role of TWAS-ARO and Arab institutions in sustaining the future.
Based upon the meetings, several recommendations and proposals arose, among which are the promotion of public awareness and appreciation of science; the creation of networks of excellence within the region and with Arab scientists abroad; the support of the new generation of scientists and linking between young scientists and older generations; the propagation of excellence and ethics in science, and last but not least, the proclamation of an Arab Nobel Laureate working in the region, within the next ten years.

Sharing Quality Higher Education Across Borders: The Role of Associations and Institutions

First Global Meeting of Associations 14-15 November 2005
and
International Conference 15-16 November 2005

The first-ever Global Meeting of Associations bringing together representatives from national, regional and international associations of higher education institutions and rectors’ conferences will focus on what associations can do to ensure that expanding cross-border higher education has a positive impact. Plenary sessions and parallel working groups will examine facts and trends at the global level, debate international policy responses as well as opportunities and challenges ahead. Participants will be invited to work towards a collective action plan. A growing list of regional and national associations have agreed to attend, and we look forward to welcoming the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association des Universités francophones, the Association of African Universities, the Union de Universidades de América Latina, as well as the European University Association. On the national level, associations from Australia, Canada, Italy, South Africa and the USA are among those who have already agreed to attend. This Meeting is for association representatives only.

Focusing on higher education institutions as key actors in cross-border education, the International Conference will build on the results of the Meeting. This Conference will address the place of cross-border higher education in internationalisation strategies, how these are changing and why. University leaders will be invited to develop action plans to be adopted at the institutional level and formulate their expectations from associations. The Conference welcomes representatives of universities and higher education institutions, other higher education stakeholders, as well as representatives of UNESCO, OECD and the EU. Most heads of national, regional and international associations of universities will remain for both events.

Programme and Registration:
Early registration
deadline for both events is 1 July 2005.
The events are organised by the International Association of Universities and are co-hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt.

Sociological Knowledge for Induced Development

The social science conference “Sociological Knowledge for Induced Development”, was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, 30-31 May 2005. The closed conference discussed the major emerging or desirable directions in the development and practical use of social science knowledge, and celebrated the recent publication of the International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences (Elsevier, 2002), a recent landmark event in social sciences.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Professor Neil Smelser, University of California at Berkeley, initiator and senior “architect” of the Encyclopedia (IE),inaugurated the conference. IE is the product of a collective international effort by social scientists to take stock of the current stage of knowledge in their disciplines. A copy of IE was donated to the BA, by the publishing house, Elsevier.
