Regional Arab Dialogue on Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and Sustainable Development
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized a conference for Regional Arab Dialogue on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), Innovation and Sustainable Development, 26-28 June 2005, in collaboration with the International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The conference revolved around four main themes: General trends and the emerging international IP architecture; Health–2005 and beyond; Access to knowledge and educational material; and Protection of expressions of folklore, cultural heritage and traditional knowledge in the Arab region.
Among the recommendations of the conference was the need for devising strategies at the national level to enhance public awareness on the various aspects of intellectual property (IP). Such strategies must take into consideration the cultural, social and economic characteristics of the respective country.
Discussions also promoted a broader perspective on IP that fully incorporates the development dimension, as well as the need to study the socio-economic impacts of trade agreements. Enhancing the participation of Arab NGOs and civil society in IP discussions was also recommended. Furthermore, it was noted that technical assistance strategies of the Arab countries should be reconsidered and improved and IP material be made available in Arabic.

Sharing Quality Higher Education Across Borders:
The Role of Associations and Institutions
First Global Meeting of Associations
14-15 November 2005 and International Conference 15-16 November 2005
The first-ever Global Meeting of Associations bringing together representatives from national, regional and international associations of higher education institutions and rectors’ conferences will focus on what associations can do to ensure that expanding cross-border higher education has a positive impact. Plenary sessions and parallel working groups will examine facts and trends at the global level, debate international policy responses as well as opportunities and challenges ahead. Participants will be invited to work towards a collective action plan. A growing list of regional and national associations have agreed to attend, and we look forward to welcoming the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association des Universités francophones, the Association of African Universities, the Union de Universidades de América Latina, as well as the European University Association. On the national level, associations from Australia, Canada, Italy, South Africa and the USA are among those who have already agreed to attend. This Meeting is for association representatives only.
Focusing on higher education institutions as key actors in cross-border education, the International Conference will build on the results of the Meeting. This Conference will address the place of cross-border higher education in internationalisation strategies, how these are changing and why. University leaders will be invited to develop action plans to be adopted at the institutional level and formulate their expectations from associations. The Conference welcomes representatives of universities and higher education institutions, other higher education stakeholders, as well as representatives of UNESCO, OECD and the EU. Most heads of national, regional and international associations of universities will remain for both events.
The events are organised by the International Association of Universities and are co-hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt.
