Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. The CSSP will help researchers and scientists to get the best support needed to advance their work through international collaborations.

BA/CSSP Research Grants Program for Egyptian Researchers

The Center for Special Studies and Programs, Bibliotheca Alexandrina offers a number of research grants for Egyptians postdoctoral scientists and researchers in the following scientific fields:

 

§  Agricultural Sciences

§  Biology and Biotechnology

§  Chemistry and Biochemistry

§  Earth Sciences

§  Engineering Sciences and Technology

§  Information Technology and Bioinformatics

§  Mathematics

§  Medical Sciences

§  Pre-University Education

§  Physics and Biophysics

 

Eligibility and Deadlines

§  Egyptian scholars who have earned their PhD

§  within the past five years (following December 2010).

§  Applicants must hold a current position at a public/private academic or research institution in Egypt, and the research must be conducted in Egypt.

§  Currently engaged or can arrange to work on a joint research project with foreign counterpart(s) at a university or research center abroad.

§  Applicants must not exceed 35 years of age by January 2016.

§  The maximum duration of the project is 2 years and the maximum budget that can be granted is 75,000 EGP.

 

Grant applications must be submitted online before 1 June 2016.

Call for nominations for the 2016 TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize

Call for nominations for the 2016 TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize
Deadline for Application:  16 May 2016

TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, in partnership with Lenovo, the Chinese multinational computer hardware and electronics company, is inviting nominations for the 2016 TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize.

The Prize, sponsored by Lenovo, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists living and working in the developing countries.

In 2016 the prize will be given for outstanding achievements in Chemical Sciences.

The Prize carries a monetary award of USD100,000 provided by Lenovo, as well as a medal and a certificate highlighting the recipient's major contributions. The prize will be presented at a special ceremony arranged by TWAS.

The deadline for receiving nominations is 16 May 2016.

European Commission has announced the Open call for proposal for the Individual Fellowship Scheme of Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) under Horizon 2020 Programme.

This action is meant to support individual researchers from anywhere in the world. Mobility across borders is a must and Cross-sectoral mobility is also encouraged.

Experienced researchers (Researchers with doctoral degree or at least four years’ full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline) can apply based on an application prepared jointly by the researcher and host organization in an academic or non-academic sector.

BioVisionAlexandria 2016 Conference

BioVisionAlexandria 2016 Conference
12-14 April 2016

The eight edition of BioVisionAlexandria Conference (BVA2016) took place from 12 to 14 April, 2016 in Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt, under the theme of BVA 2016 will be “New Life Sciences: The Road Ahead”. BioVisionAlexandria 2016 conference gathered more than 1800 participants mostly university students and, academia, and more than 120 speakers from the four corners of the globe including; eminent scientists, ministers, and industry representatives. 

The conference addressed three main streams: Biomedical Sciences and Engineering, Food, Nutrition, and Well-being and Current Practices and Future Insights. These three streams covered various topics to name few: Science and Technology, Digital Health, Genomics, Food Security, Sustainable Development, Precision Medicine, Education and Research, Bioethics, Technology Transfer, Microbiome, Biotechnology, Translational Medicine, Environmental Studies, Toxicology, Nanotechnology, Robotics, Agriculture, Health.

The conference was preceded by TWAS/BVA.NXT 2016 conference, 10–11 April 2016, at which 39 young researchers under the age of 35  from different developing countries explored research ethics in the developing world, under the theme: “Research Ethics and Social Responsibility”. The two-day program had 10 Speakers covering various themes: Research Ethics and Scientific Integrity, Researchers’ Social Responsibility and Intellectual Property Rights.

Alongside BVA 2016,  BioFair@BioVisionAlexandria took place, at which different universities, research institutes, publishers, and  companies  had presented  their products and services  to the conference attendees. Also a Poster Session was held were 38 researchers to present their research in a poster form, the posters covered three main fields: Agriculture, Environment and Health.

Water at a Crossroad Public Lecture

Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, Director General and Chief Executive Officer, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Austria, gave a public lecture titled “Water at a Crossroad” on Thursday, 21 April 2016, at Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The lecture addressed the challenges facing freshwater hotspots worldwide under climate change, salinity, sea level impact on freshwater from a global perspective.
