TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, is a global science academy founded in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world under the leadership of Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. TWAS works to support sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy. TWAS’s mission is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South.
To help organize activities and disseminate information, TWAS has established five regional offices —as first known. The five Regional Partners are located in: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Beijing, China; Alexandria, Egypt; Bangalore, India; and Pretoria, South Africa.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosts the TWAS Arab Regional Office (as first known) since June 2005. In 2018, by action of the TWAS Council, the name was changed to TWAS Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP). TWAS-AREP aims to promote scientific capacity and excellence in the region through annual activities for the Arab scientists especially young researchers (prizes, affiliation program, meetings for the Arab members, young scientist’s conferences, workshops and public lectures).
