The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in cooperation with the Writing and Scripts Center, Bibliotheca Alexandrina Academic Research Sector. and Majlis Tahtawi, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Library Sector, are organizing a symposium for “Ali Pasha Mubarak” the Pioneer of the Educational Renaissance on  Monday, 26 November 2018; 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Delegates Hall. The TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme enables competent researchers from the developing countries to visit participating centers of excellence in the South for research collaboration. An associate is appointed for three years during which s/he can visit a selected center twice for 2-3 months each time. Almost 300 centers participate in the scheme.

TWAS provides travel support for the associates and a contribution towards incidental local expenses up to USD 300 per month while living expenses are covered by the host centers.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree and include an invitation letter from the host center. Only centers listed here can be chosen as host centers. Special consideration is given to scientists from isolated institutions in developing countries. Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline: 5 December 2018.

Within the framework of the signed Memorandum of Understanding on 26 July 2018 between the Bibliotheca Alexandrina -represented by the CSSP- and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office Egypt (UN RCO), the Office of the Highest Representative of the United Nations in Egypt, to partner and set up a series of interactive engagements on the future of Egypt, using the latest foresight techniques developed by global corporations and academia.     

The 1^st   Alexandria Dialogue was held in September 2018 at Bibliotheca Alexandrina under the theme “Egypt in 2050: An Inclusive Society”, discussions included new concepts of social justice, welfare, equality, inclusiveness; job and the labor market; technological innovation; spatial development, especially in cities; resilience; the changed relationship between local, national, regional and global; and intergenerational justice.

Both Dr. Mostafa El-Feki, Director, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Mr. Richard Dictus,  United Nations Resident Coordinator, Arab Republic of Egypt gave the opening speech Eng. Hoda El- Mikaty, Deputy Director, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Dr. Marwa El-Wakil Head of the Academic Research Sector, Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Ambassador Fatmaelzahraa Eitman, Advisor, Bibliotheca Alexandrina witnessed the opening. The dialogue was attended by a group of high caliber experts.  

In November 2018, another dialogue will take place under the theme Citizenship of the Future: What Will it Mean to Be an Educated Person in Egypt in 2050.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of  Prof. Mohamed El-Sharkawi, Professor Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington, USA. He was a fellow of IEEE. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1980. In 1980, he joined the University of Washington as a faculty member where he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering. He also served as the Associate Chairman and the Chairman of Graduate Studies and Research. He authored four textbooks in the area of electric energy, electric drives, electric safety and wind energy. He also authored over 250 technical papers and research books and holds 5 licensed patents in the areas of wind energy, dynamic VAR management, and minimum arc sequential circuit breaker.

His extensive professional activities included serving as the Vice President for Technical Activities of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, founding chairman of several task forces, working groups and subcommittees, including the IEEE-PES subcommittee of renewable energy machines and systems. He was also the founder or chairman of several international and regional conferences, organizer and chairman of numerous panels and special sessions, and organizer and instructor of several international tutorials on topics such as power systems, wind energy, renewable energy integration, electric safety, induction voltage hazards, load forecasting, vulnerability assessment, VAR management, and power systems operations.

Professor El-Sharkawi was awarded several educational, service, and research awards. Among them is the Outstanding Educator Award for IEEE Western region in 2014 and the International Fellow award 2015-2017.

He had outstanding scientific contributions with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina through the Center for Special Studies and Programs(CSSP). We have been honored to work with him and host him several times from 2006 till 2015 at our visiting scholar program, a special program organized by (CSSP) by which it invites an international scholar each year to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) for a certain period of time, with the aim of disseminating and exchanging knowledge with other scholars, researchers and students working in the same field of expertise. Within the framework of  the VSP he gave several lectures, workshops and seminars.
