Darwin's Living Legacy: A Conference on Evolution and Society

As the world celebrates the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth and 150 years since the first appearance of The Origin of Species, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in collaboration with the British Council is organizing a three-day conference on Darwin, titled Darwin’s Living Legacy : An International conference on Evolution and Society.
Darwin’s descendant and board member of Charles Darwin’s trust, Randal Keynes and Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria will be delivering the keynote address. Moreover, many international speakers are coming to the conference among which are Sir Patrick Bateson, Professor of Ethology at Cambridge University and Prof. Graham Rook, Professor of Medical Microbiology, University College London.
Furthermore, Prof. Nidhal Guessom, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Professor Mohey Elbanna, Professor of General Surgery, Ain Shams University and Dr. Marwa El-Shakry, Associate Professor of History at Columbia University will be among the speakers participating from the Arab Region.
Not only will the conference discuss Darwin’s theories on speciation and adaption but it will also explore the relationship between science and education, fossils and molecules as evidence for evolution, disease and epidemics’ emergence, the possibility of intelligent life on other planets and more interesting topics.
The conference will feature many debates, in addition to the Darwin Now Exhibition which will be running at the same time.

Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI) are meant to track the overall sustainability of a society with respect to its environmental, social and economic integrity. SDI are used by governments, non-government organizations, community groups and research institutions as a diagnostic tool through detecting trends in the environment.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina is honored to announce that it is organizing a conference on Sustainable Development Indicators, during the period from 7 to 8 December 2009. The conference aims at gathering experts and scientists from the four corners of the globe to exchange their knowledge and experiences for the benefit of society.
The conference will discuss various themes including:

2- Biodiversity
3- Environmental Policies Laws and Conventions
4- State of Current Practice
5- Environmental Risk Management Government and Society

BioVisionAlexandria 2010 overriding theme is New Life Sciences: Future Prospects where we intend to explore the new frontiers and new areas in life sciences that will vastly serve humanity and provide hope for solving the world’s most pressing issues.
Nobel Prize winner in Medicine 1993, Prof. Richard Roberts from the United Kingdom, Prof. Peter Agre, Nobel prize winner in Chemistry 2003, and Nobel prize winner in Economics 2007, Prof. Eric Maskin will come to BioVisionAlexandria 2010 to participate in the conference’s Nobel Day among other distinguished recipients of the Nobel Prize.
So far, eighty distinguished speakers from the four corners of the globe, will participate in BVA 2010 conference. Among which, Prof. Miguel Nicolelis, Professor of Neurobiology Biomedical Engineering and Psychological and Brain Sciences and Co-Director of the Center for Neuroengineering, Duke University Medical Center, USA, Mr. Philippe Desmarescaux, Chairman of The World Life Sciences Forum, BioVision, France, Prof. Jeffrey McNeely, Chief Scientist of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Switzerland, Baroness Susan Greenfield, Director of the The Royal Institution of Great Britain, UK, Prof. Gilbert Omenn, Professor of Medicine, Genetics, and Public Health, University of Michigan, USA, and Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, Chairman of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation and UNESCO Cousteau Chair in Ecotechnology, India.

Call for Posters
In the age where advancement in technology is limitless and the Biosciences world is rapidly changing, interaction between worldwide scientific communities is vital. The BioVisionAlexandria 2010 Poster Session will provide a wealth of opportunities for scientists, especially young ones, to meet other life sciences professionals and present their work in a setting of discussion and interchange.
The theme of the conference is New Life Sciences: Future Prospects, and the key issues to be addressed in both the Conference and its Poster Session are:
1) Health
2) Food and Agriculture
3) Environment
Young scientists are invited to submit an abstract for presentation during this poster session.
The poster should address a related subject in the fields of new life sciences.

Join CSSP
The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) is pleased to announce the launching of the CSSP Roster through which those willing to join CSSP may apply.
CSSP is currently offering an internship program whereby we are seeking undergraduate students who possess certain skills and a specific background that fits within the scope of our center’s activities and projects. In addition, we are also interested in identifying professionals, fresh graduates, postgraduates, Masters and/or PhD holders in different fields (Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences) who are interested in joining our team for a short term (six months) or a long term consultancy position or for a full-time position (up to three years contract).

Research Grants for Postdoctoral Researchers
The British Academy (BA), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) of the UK are pleased to invite applications under the fourth round of their Visiting Scholars scheme for South Asia and the Middle East. The Scheme aims to attract early career researchers in any branch of the humanities or social sciences to collaborate on research and develop ideas likely to lead to a joint research proposal in the near future. Researchers, in conjunction with a UK host academic, can apply to spend two to six months undertaking a clearly specified research project in the United Kingdom.
Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status and must have obtained their doctorates after 1 January 2004. (Academics without a PhD must demonstrate equivalent status).
Applicants from Egypt must be residents of Egypt. Grants are provided to a maximum of £7,500 and are intended to cover travel and subsistence costs for the Visiting Scholar for the duration of their stay.
