Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. Beating Cancer Cells to Death with Gold Nanoparticles in More than One Way Lecture

 The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences in the Developing World – Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO), will hold a Public lecture entitled: “Beating Cancer Cells to Death with Gold Nanoparticles in More than One Way”.

 The lecture will be presented by Professor Mostafa El-Sayed; Professor, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and it will shed light on the newest findings and techniques in using gold-nanoparticles in cancer treatment.

The lecture will be held in the Great Hall at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Conference Center on 23 December 2010 at 14:00 pm.

The lecture is open to the public.

TWAS-ARO 6th Annual Meeting

  The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World - Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) will hold its 6th Annual meeting on 22 December 2010 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The theme of this year's meeting is "Linking Research Institutions, Universities, and Industry in the Arab World" and will aim at creating self-consciousness and cooperation among Arab countries, in addition to exploring ways to improve knowledge transfer between research institutions and industry in particular. TWAS-ARO members and young affiliates along with other eminent speakers, will give a talk or participate in a panel discussion around the meeting's topic.

TWAS-ARO Regional Prize winner, in addition to TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates 2010 announcement will take place.

Registrants will also have the priority to attend the Public Lecture of Prof. Mostafa El-Sayed, Professor, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA which will be held on the 23rd of December 2010, under the topic: "Beating Cancer Cells to Death with Gold Nanoparticles in More than One Way".

Registration is now open (deadline for registration is 15 December 2010).

Registration Fees:

1- Individual Registration: EGP 25/person.

 2- Group Registration: EGP 15/person for a group of 10 or more.

 The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) has announced the election of 58 new members, including 11 women, during  the Academy's 21st General Meeting in Hyderabad. The current TWAS membership now stands at 1000 members. The new TWAS members, including 4 TWAS-ARO members from 5 different Arab countries, will be inducted at the 22nd General Meeting to be held in Morocco next year.

In cooperation with its 5 Regional Offices, TWAS has selected 25 new Young Affiliates for the period 2010–2014 (5 TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates from 5 different Arab countries).

The Balzan Prizes 2010 have been announced in Milan by the Chairman of the Balzan General Prize Committee, Salvatore Veca, together with the President of the Balzan “Prize” Foundation, Ambassador Bruno Bottai, at the Corriere della Sera Foundation.

Dr. Palis, President of the TWAS and a professor at  Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada - IMPA, won the Prize for  Mathematics (pure or applied).


Creative Thinking Workshop

 

Creative Thinking Workshop

  On 16 October 2010, the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in cooperation with Technokids Egypt, held the "Creative Thinking" workshop. The Workshop aimed at preparing school students for scientific research and creative thinking. It was divided into four sessions, each session covered a different approach to scientific thinking and innovation. Participants were divided into groups; each group worked on a prototype for a robot with basic materials such as syringes, ropes and pieces of wood. The closing session was an introduction to the Micro Research Grants program, offered by the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), the procedures and the required documents for application.

International Business Leaders Forum

  On 22 September 2010, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) received delegates from the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF); Ms. Ros Tennyson, CEO of IBLF and Dr. Roman Pryjomko, Advisor at IBLF. Ms. Tennyson gave a presentation to the BA staff on IBLF activities and its International Partnership Initiative. Then, she discussed with the attendees the possible opportunities for collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina .

CSSP Gathering: Celebrating 7 years of Excellence

  Celebrating 7 years of excellence, intellectual rigor and fruitful accomplishments, the CSSP organized the "Get Together Lunch" for the second consecutive year, celebrating its 7th birthday. This event gathered former CSSP members, as well as current ones. 

 The celebration was inaugurated by a welcome speech by Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Director of the CSSP, and followed by brief statements by the CSSP members. Every member shared their experience within the CSSP, their current positions and the achievements that they have accomplished since they left the CSSP, in addition to how the CSSP gave them the needed push to continue with their professional lives. A short video was then displayed, followed by the reception lunch.
