The Resident Artist Exhibition Gathers the Works of Six Artists at the BA

Posted on

Alexandria— The BA will host during the period from 1-25 July 2007, the Resident Artist Exhibition– Second Meeting, which is a project adopted by the BA Arts Center as a plastic arts event documenting Egyptian art in the twentieth century in the fields of sculpture, painting, graphics, ceramics, in an attempt to bridge between the past, the present, and the future.

Through this exhibition, the BA presents selected artworks by six carefully selected young artists. Based on the success of their solo exhibitions and participation in the Youth Salon and other exhibitions. These artists were chosen by the Arts Center to spend a period ranging from one to two months at the BA. During that period they were allowed to witness the BA activities in different aspects of creativity (audiovisuals, music, dance) and to sense the rhythm of the fascinating city of Alexandria.

Dr. Mostafa El-Razaz, Advisor of the BA for Plastic Arts, stated that the Resident Artist is a system applied in art and cultural institutions and academies throughout the world. In such places, invitations go to artists who are free from teaching hours or work duties so that he/ she can freely reside in the institution, commune with his/ her inner self and newly asses his/ her abilities and talents, while also responding to his creative impulses in an ambiance different from his usual studio or workplace.

This system helps relieve the artist from academic or work responsibilities during his stay in the hosting institution. Consequently, his views become clearer and free of his ordinary “self” of the studio. He becomes open to new influences and different ideas.

During this year, many invitations were sent to selected young artists, and who have graciously accepted it. They were Howaida Al-Sebay, Hussein Abd El-Basset, Wael Darweesh, Ayman Al-Samry, Amal Nasr, and Reem Hassan. The Exhibition presents a selection from this pioneering project, made up of the works that were offered to the Library by these young resident artists.

The Exhibition will be held at the West Exhibition Hall, BA Conference Center.
