The BA Planetarium Science Center is organizing the Alexandria Science and Engineering Fair, from 30 to 31 January 2025 for Alexandrian students. The local fair of the participating governorates (Beheira, Gharbia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Port Said, Damietta, and Matrouh) will be held on 1 February at the BA Conference Center.
This fair will qualify to the finals of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF), which will be hosted by the Library in February 2025. The fair will also qualify to the International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF), which is the ultimate international competition in the field of science at the pre-university level, held every year in May in the USA.
School students aged between 14-18 years (third grade of preparatory and secondary schools) will take part in this year’s fair. 223 students will compete in 22 scientific categories, with a total of 138 projects. The local governorates fair will witness the participation of 226 students, with a total of 153 projects in 22 scientific categories.
Participating students conduct research in a specific topic of their choice related to their research project. Students are able to choose from a variety of scientific topics, such as zoology, behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, bacteriology, earth and planetary science, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy and transportation, environmental management, medicine and health sciences, physics and mathematics, astronomy and botany.
The competition also welcomes the participation of students below the advertised age, to compete for a range of special prizes, including Best Idea, Best Presentation, and Best Group Project.
Student projects are evaluated by university professors, scientists and specialized engineers, as well as professional volunteers in the industry. The Grand Jury Prize is determined on a hundred-point scale, with points given on creative abilities, scientific thinking, engineering objectives, accuracy, skills, and clarity.
