The cisterns of Alexandria are buildings that have lost their basic function over the course of time due to the evolution of the water company in the second half of the 19th century. This has led to the neglect of both their structure and historical value. Lately, the remaining cisterns in the city have been added to a list of historical buildings in Alexandria compiled by the Alex Med center and protected under Egyptian Law no. 144 of 2006.
In February 2008, Alex Med began an ambitious project to document the history of these cisterns and analyze their condition in order to write a proposal for developing them and set guidelines for their conservation. The project will also publish a book on the cisterns of Alexandria.
