The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting the conference on ‘Bridging Scales and Epistemologies: Linking Local Knowledge and Global Science in Multi-scale Assessments’, 17- 25 March 2004.
The conference is organized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), an international scientific assessment on the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being. It is an attempt to “link local, national and global assessments and include both scientific knowledge and traditional/ indigenous/practitioner’s knowledge.” The conference will involve a wide diversity of people who embody a range of expertise and experience, including individuals involved in the MA, academic scholars, indigenous peoples and NGOs.
‘Bridging Scales and Epistemologies’ is organized around five themes:
1. Integrating local knowledge into global scientific assessment.
2. Methodologies for integrating data across multiple scales.
3. Understanding cross-scale interactions.
4. Designing better assessments: lessons learned.
5. Scale and epistemology issues in ecosystem management.
